At the August 2020 Loganville City Council meeting last week, long-time O’Kelly Library Board Member Ann Jones was recognized for her “34 years of outstanding service, commitment and dedication” to Loganville’s O’Kelly Library.
Jones, wife of the late former mayor and councilman Mike Jones, recently retired from the board after serving for more than three decades. Another long-term and current library board member, Janice Tribble, was on hand to share in the recognition and thank Jones for her service.
Tribble also noted that the former Uncle Remus Library System that the Hoke O’Kelly Memorial Library is a member of is now the Azalea Regional Library System. The nine member library system, which includes all the libraries in Walton County, is a member of PINES, a public library automation and lending network of more than 300 libraries in 53 library systems.
In a press release earlier in the year, it was noted that the Regional Board of Trustees for the Uncle Remus Regional Library System reported that it had voted to change the Regional System’s name to the Azalea Regional Library System, “which is more representative of the six counties that comprise the current Regional System. Member Counties include: Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Morgan, Putnam, and Walton. The azalea is also the official wildflower for the State of Georgia, adopted on April 19, 1979, and blooms from March through August in all parts of the state. Various native species are located in all of the counties in the Regional System and bloom brilliant shades of white, pink, orange, scarlet, yellow, and purple.”
Prior to the COVID-19 shutdown, the Hoke O’Kelly Library in Loganville was open to the public seven a per week. Tribble said at this time they are not sure of the date when the library will be able to fully opening to the public, but hope it will be sometime soon.
