Breaking: Covington man drowns after vehicle pursuit that ends in Butts County

Newton County, GA (May 29, 2020) – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked by Newton County’s Sheriff’s Office to assist in an investigation that occurred in Butts County following a traffic stop initiated in Newton County.

According to a press release from the GBI, the preliminary investigation indicates that the incident began with a traffic stop in Newton County by NCSO that resulted in a vehicle pursuit into Hickory Point Drive in Jackson, Ga. in Butts County. Gavin Campbell, age 19, of Covington, exited the vehicle and fled on foot into Jackson Lake. Officers reportedly dove into the lake in an attempt to rescue him. Members of the Georgia State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Butts County Sheriff’s Office, Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, and Butts County Fire and Rescue Dive Team attempted to locate him last night, but rescue efforts were not successful. His body was eventually located at about 2:30 pm. today.

An autopsy will be conducted by a GBI Medical Examiner. The Georgia DNR will investigate the death and the GBI is investigating what led to the death.
