The City of Social Circle released the following statement Friday regarding the explosion Thursday morning at the Granite Packaging Plant in the City.
The explosion in Social Circle Quickly Contained by First Responders
An explosion occurred at Granite Packing in Social Circle, injuring 4, at 10:47 am, Thursday. Social Circle Fire and Police Departments responded, along with Walton EMS. Due to the presence and nature of chemicals involved, Walton County Fire and Hazmat Units were requested. As a result of the prompt actions of first responders, the fire was quickly extinguished, roof damage and contaminants were isolated to the building, and 3 individuals were treated on the scene and released. A fourth individual was treated by Walton EMS and flown to Grady Hospital in Atlanta for treatment. The chemist for Granite Packing was on scene, and assisted with chemical identification allowing for safe and proper containment and decontamination. The cause of the explosion is under investigation, and no present danger exists for residents or the community.
Social Circle Mayor David Keener said that there are injuries reported as a result of the explosion Thursday morning at the Granite Packaging Plant.
“We had a report of a small explosion at a factory in Social Circle. Social Circle Fire, Police and Walton EMS crews arrived on the scene to find the building evacuated and a report of injuries,” Keener said. “One person was flown by medieval to Atlanta and the others were treated and released on scene. Walton County Fire, Hamat and GSP were assisting on the call.”
