A car was allegedly stolen from outside the Monroe Food Mart just after 9:30 p.m. on July 24, 2018. The  driver had parked it outside the store and left it running while she ran into the store to pick up a couple of items. She walked back out to find her 2016 silver Honda Civic was gone. Her phone was in the vehicle, but Monroe Police Department report that Metro would not ping the phone due to the nature of the call. Surveillance footage, however, showed a black man in dark clothing walk up on the store, see the unoccupied vehicle, run to it and jump in, driving north on North Broad Street.

According to the MPD report, the theft was reported and the vehicle entered in the Georgia Crime Information Center data base.

Five days later, just after 8 p.m. on July 29, the driver of the vehicle called in to say that she was standing in front of that vehicle parked in the area of 429 Plaza Drive in Monroe, just a mile away from where it went missing. She told officers that a friend had noticed it there and let her know. The vehicle was unlocked, but the phone and anything else belonging to her did not appear to be in it except for a 12-pack of beer. There was damage to the bumper of the vehicle.

The vehicle was towed to Monroe Police Department and processed for evidence.
