GBI investigating after a man dies hours after a run-in with Social Circle Police

Social Circle, GA (November 9, 2020) – On Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020, the GBI was requested by the Social Circle Police Department to investigate the death of Seneca Williams, age 43, following an encounter between Williams and officers.

According to a press release from the GBI, at about 2:00 a.m. Social Circle Police Department Officers were investigating what appeared to be a hit and run incident. Williams was considered a suspect and when approached by officers for that as well as an active warrant, he fled. Officers pursued Williams and deployed a Taser. As officers attempted to take Williams into custody, he failed to follow commands, allegedly continued to physically resist officers and was able to flee the scene. He was reportedly not seen again by officers.

Later that day, at about 7:30 p.m., the body of Williams was found behind a residence in the immediate vicinity where he was last seen by officers. The Social Circle City Police Department contacted the GBI Investigative Office in Athens to begin an investigation. The body of Williams was transported to the GBI Crime Lab where an autopsy by the GBI medical examiner will be performed.
