The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating another officer-involved shooting in Athens that happened just after 10:12 a.m. on Monday, October 14, 2019. According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that police responded to a 911 call regarding a woman who had a gun and a knife but did not provide any specifics on the problem. When officers arrived, Bonny Thomas, 54, of Athens, allegedly came toward the officer with the knife raised and claimed to also have a gun. She was given commands to put the knife down but allegedly began to run toward the officer, who fired one shot, striking her. She later died from the injury. No officers were injured in the incident.
An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur and the GBI will continue an independent investigation. It will then be turned over to the Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
