(Norcross, GA Gwinnett County Police Department reports that an officer received minor injuries while trying to extricate a driver from a fiery crash on Interstate 85 early Wednesday morning.

According to a press release from GCPD, the crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on July 8, 2020, in the northbound lane of I.85 between Jimmy Carter Blvd. and Indian Trail Road in unincorporated Norcross. Officers from the West Precinct responded to a 911 report of a crash between two vehicles, with one on fire. On arrival, one officer approached the vehicle on fire and attempted to extricate the unconscious driver and was injured in the process. The driver of the truck died as a result of his injures.

The officer was treated for his minor injuries at a local hospital and eventually discharged.

GCPD report that there were two vehicles involved, a pickup truck and an SUV.  “Kyle Persing, 32, of Ochlocknee, GA was traveling northbound on Interstate 85 near the Center Way bridge in his white Ford F150 pickup.  The other driver was traveling the same direction in a white Nissan Rogue. Though the details of this crash are still under investigation, investigators believe that the driver of the F150 may have either lost control or changed lanes and struck the Nissan Rogue causing both vehicles to veer into the center median wall,” GCPD reported. “The F150 overturned several times and eventually caught fire. The driver of the Nissan Rogue was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.”

GCPD report that the dynamics of this collision are still under investigation.
