Information gathered about visitors
We collect aggregate user-specific information on which pages our readers access. This information helps us assess user interest in the content we provide, which helps us improve our content. We can provide a better site if we know which stories our users are reading, how frequently they visit and how long they stay on a page.
The Site automatically collects limited information about your computer’s Internet connection, including your IP address, when you visit our sites. Your IP address does not contain personally identifiable information, nor does it identify you personally.
Information you submit
To use certain features on the Site (such as story comments, profiles, forums, blogs, letters to the editor, personalized pages and other interactive applications) visitors need to register and to provide certain information. We may ask for your name, e-mail address, gender, age, and zip code, and we might request information on your interest in certain topics.
After registering with the Site, you may be sent email from us. From time to time, we may send you e-mail regarding your account status. If you have signed up for e-mail newsletters, you may unsubscribe by following the instructions included with the email you receive. From time to time, we may send you email about reader surveys.
Information we gather
We may analyze our reader demographics and preferences. When we provide information to our advertisers and partners it is generally in generalized aggregated form regarding reader preferences and traffic statistics.
In some cases, we contract with third parties to provide services, including credit-card and bill processing, shipping, e-mail, list processing and analytics or promotions management. We provide these parties with no more than the information necessary for them to perform their specific services contracted.
Children under the Age of 13
If you are under the age of 13, do not send us any information about yourself including your name, address or e-mail address. You may only send us personally identifiable information if your parents have verified to us their consent to the collection of such information.
As a media company, some of our services and content may be attractive to children. We strive to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
- Includes our contact information.
- Explains the types of personal information we collect, and how we use it.
- Explains our practices in terms of sharing personal information with third parties.
- Allows parents to consent to the collection and use of their children’s personal information, without consenting to disclosure to third parties.
- Does not condition a child’s participation in an activity on the child’s providing more personal information than is reasonably necessary for the activity.
- Allows parents to review their child’s information, have it deleted, or refuse to permit any further collection, by contacting us.
We encourage children under the age of 13 to consult with their parents before furnishing personal data. Parents should supervise their children’s online activities and consider using parental controls available from online services and software manufacturers to provide a child-friendly online environment. These tools can also prevent children from disclosing their personal information online without parental permission.
Monroe Local Commenting Policy
When you leave a comment on a post, you are joining a conversation. Being part of a conversation means engaging with others by adding to the discussion, bringing forth new information, or being funny or clever. Just like in other social situations, we ask that you follow etiquette when commenting. Whether you’re a seasoned commenter or you are commenting on Monroe Local for the first time, please comply with the following policy:
Don’t change the subject.
Don’t hijack a post to change the subject. Comments are open on a specific blog post to generate discussion about that subject. Wait for an open thread or start a new one if you have something to say on another topic.
Share something new.
Before you hit the publish button, take a moment to see whether you can add something new to the discussion.
Mind your manners.
This site is not a place for personal attacks and nastiness. Poor behavior, name-calling and profanity will result in you being banned from the site. Any comments accusing someone of doing something illegal will be removed unless the accusation has been proven. The comments section is not a forum for slander.
Point out mistakes gracefully.
We love to know we’ve gotten something wrong – a typo, an errant semi-colon, a misspelling – and we appreciate your help in pointing out errors. But there’s a right way to do it. Either leave a comment like “heads up – typo” or “FYI – incorrect information”, or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org pointing out a mistake. If you don’t like a particular story, ignore it. Every post might not be for you, but might interest someone else.
Take extra care to make your message clear and avoid making unintended attacks. Sometimes a lack of clarity results in misunderstandings that can be interpreted as attacks.
Don’t hide behind anonymity.
It’s fine to have an online name and decide not to use your real name. However, it’s not alright to attack others or out them when you are hiding behind the cloak of anonymity. Don’t say it if you can’t own it. If you do, you will be banned from commenting. Plus, you don’t want to experience commenter’s remorse, that regret you feel after you post something and your angriness, crankiness, etc. has subsided. Even if the comment is deleted, it still is seen by hundreds of people before it gets deleted, and of course it will live in Google’s cache forever. Think before you post.
We don’t agree on everything, and sometimes people say dumb things. You can voice your opinion and disagree with someone without insulting the person.
If you think someone has crossed a line with a comment or if you have trouble posting a comment, drop a line email@example.com.
