In-person graduations take place this week for the WCSD Class of 2020

It’s been a strange ending to their school years for the Class of 2020 high school seniors due to the coronavirus pandemic. But this week things should begin to normalize at least a little for Walton County School District’s graduating students. Monroe Area High School, Loganville High School and Walnut Grove High School will host limited in-person and virtual graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2020 on June 18, 19 and 20 respectively. Monroe Area High School will have its ceremony at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 18. Loganville High School will follow at 8 p.m. on  Friday, June 19 and Walnut Grove High School finishes out the ceremonies at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 20.
Due to health and safety precautions, these ceremonies will have to be held outside so the weather could be a problem. At this time, Thursday and Friday are predicting possible afternoon thunderstorms. The following are alternative times and dates if inclement weather interferes with the plans:
  • Monroe Area High School | Friday, June 19 at 9 a.m.
  • Loganville High School | Saturday, June 20 at 8 p.m.
  • Walnut Grove High School plans to wait for a break in the weather in order to hold their event on Saturday.
In order to guarantee the health and safety of all participating or in attendance, all the high schools will implement and follow local and state health guidelines. Since each student was only issued four tickets for family members to attend, the ceremonies will be live-streamed for those who are not able to be there in person. Those who are elderly, immunocompromised or have any pre-existing conditions listed in the Governor’s latest Executive Order are urged to take advantage of live online viewing options.
The following procedures and safety precautions noted by school officials.
  • Cloth face coverings are recommended.
  • The use of hand sanitizer is recommended upon entry and exit.
    • Hand sanitizing stations will be located at each entrance.
  • Family units must sit together and maintain 6 feet of distance between other visitors in the stands.
    • Each school will have available seats marked.
  • Visitors and families of graduates will not be allowed on the field prior to or following the ceremony.
  • Graduates will be directed off the field and to the parking lot immediately following graduation.
  • Families will be directed to exit the stands and meet their graduates in the parking lot following the ceremony.
  • It is the responsibility of each family to adhere to social distancing guidelines while exiting the stadium and returning to their vehicle.

Loganville Christian Academy and George Walton Academy are waiting until July to host their graduation ceremonies.
