Your Local News is in the process of introducing its third intake of Journalism Explorers – local high students considering a future in journalism. The Explorer program is part of the Learning for Life initiative sponsored by Boy Scouts of America. These are high school students who are interested in taking a look at opportunities in journalism as a possible future career. We began working with the program in 2017 and are happy to say that we still have some of the first intake active in the program. Some of them even went on to intern with Your Local News last summer and we have the first student graduating from high school this year and pursuing a college degree in journalism.
We have had the first couple of meetings with the new explorers and are now introducing those students who have decided they want to continue with this opportunity. During the course of the program, they will have their writings shared on Your Local News’ sites and possibly in Walton Living Magazine.
Fatima Chex-Arreaga, a senior of Walnut Grove High School, is the first of the new explorers to introduce to the community. To read some of the bios and stories written by some of the other YLN explorers since 2017, click or tap on this link. I look forward to reading some of the stories from the new intake of young Journalism Explorers. If the early recruits are anything to go by, we should see some great work by our young news hounds as they explore the opportunities for reporting that are available in the local community.
