Major train derailment in Lilburn involving a hazardous material fire causes evacuations overnight

An initial half-mile evacuation order has been lifted with continued atmospheric monitoring in the immediate area following an overnight train derailment in Gwinnett County. Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Rescue is announcing that all residents are now able return to their home. Multiple agencies remain at the scene assessing the damaged train cars and runoff concerns.

The incident is located between Main St NW and Harmony Grove Rd SW in Lilburn. The area north of incident is in the process of evacuations. The train had approximately 170 cars including three locomotives. Two employees involved in the derailment were able to make it to safety and are being evaluated for injuries.

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services is on scene of a major train derailment in Lilburn along the CSX rail line.

“The incident expands along the line from Main St in Lilburn to Harmony Grove Rd. There is multiple cars derailed with an active fire involving hazardous materials,” GCFES spokesman Lt. Justin Wilson said in a press release. “Evacuations are in progress for residents north of the incident.”
