Mayor Keener; returning Social Circle councilmen take Oath of Office

Newly-elected Social Circle Mayor David Keener literally got out of his hospital bed the day before to take the Oath of Office in the standing room only Community building in Social Circle on Jan. 13, 2020. With his wife, Penny, at his side, Keener put his hand on the family Bible as Walton County Probate Court Judge Bruce Wright (who himself not feeling at his healthiest) administered the Oath of Office.

After taking his seat as Mayor, Keener gave an emotional speech, thanking God, his family and the community for the support and trust put in him. He then went on to introduce Caleb Fill, a member of the Jr. ROTC program who had sent Keener a text while he was in the hospital asking whether he would be well enough to attend his swearing-in ceremony. When Keener said he was not sure, Caleb responded with, “You have to, you’re the People’s Mayor. I’ll be there. I’ll hold you up.”

“I’ll hold you up,” an emotional Keener repeated, telling Caleb how much it meant to him to have those words spoken to him at the time.
