Monroe to change speed limit on McDaniel St; amend beverage ordinance

The City of Monroe will have its July 2020 Council Meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at Monroe City Hall. Items on the Agenda include a plan to lower the speed limit from the Monroe city limits to Breedlove Drive from 45 mph to 35 mph to match the remainder of the road from Breedlove Drive to Broad Street.

Also on the agenda is an amendment to the beverage ordinance. Monroe City Administrator Logan Propes said the update under consideration does two basic things

“First, it broadens the abilities of caterers to sell alcoholic beverages at special events. Currently, this is limited to 10 events but some licensed caterers who make a living doing events would be limited under current rules.  It also allows for a temporary license for a caterer who may only want to do one or two special events without having to be a fully licensed caterer under the old rules,” Propes said.

The City is also proposing slightly expanding the boundaries of the entertainment district.

“Mostly north, south, and a little west,” Propes said. “The implementation of the Entertainment District a couple of years ago appears to have a profound impact on new investment in Downtown Monroe and has contributed to greater business success by many of our restaurants.”
