NE Georgia has record low unemployment and record high employment in November 2019

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that the Northeast Georgia region notched two records in November 2019.

The 12-county region set an all-time low unemployment rate and set a record high for employment, preliminary numbers show. The labor force also jumped in November. The Northeast Georgia region includes Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Jasper, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, and Walton counties.

“Georgia had a record number of jobs, employment and total individuals in our workforce,” Butler said. “We had the fewest number of unemployed individuals since 2001 when we had one million fewer people in our workforce. Overall, it was a spectacular month.”

Nationally, the unemployment rate fell in November to 3.5 %, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points. The nation also grew its labor force by 40,000, increased employment by 83,000 and added more 266,000 jobs.

Georgia’s unemployment rate, meanwhile, fell in November by 0.1 percentage points to 3.3 %. That rate is the lowest since the federal government began keeping records in 1976.

In Walton County, there were 105 initial unemployment claims in November, down from 129 in October and 143 in November 2018. This is down 24 for the month, 18.6 %, and down by 38 for the year, 26.6 %. In Gwinnett County, there were 999 initial unemployment claims in November compared to 1,294 in October and 1,309 in November 2018. This is 295 less for the month, 22.8 %. and 310 less for the year, 23.7 %.

Rates fell across all of Georgia’s 12 regions. Eleven set a record for the lowest rate ever.

In the Northeast region, the unemployment rate fell 0.3 percentage points in November to 2.5 %. A year ago, the rate was 3.2 %.

The labor force increased in November by 78. The November total was 308,510. That number is down by 217 from the total of November 2018.

The Northeast region ended November with 300,872 employed residents – a new record high. The number increased by 1,154 in November and went up 1,908 when compared to last November.

The number of unemployment claims increased in November by about 7 %. When compared to last November, claims were down by about 8 %.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.comshowed 4,044 active job postings in Northeast region for November.
