Obituary and funeral service: Martha Alice Garner Butler, 92, of Loganville

Martha Alice Garner Butler, 92, passed peacefully from this life and walked into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 3, 2020.

Born November 13, 1927 in Lawrenceville, GA she was the daughter of the late Richard and Lucile Garner. Martha Alice graduated from Lawrenceville High School and remained close to her classmates throughout her life. After graduation, she attended Georgia State College for Women and she held jobs with the US Army in Atlanta and with BellSouth in Atlanta and Athens. At the age of 19, she married the love of her life, David Butler, and the two raised their 8 children on a farm in Loganville, GA.

Mrs. Butler spent her younger years as a devoted wife, loving mother and hard-working homemaker. The second half of her life, she has been adored as “Mema” or “Grandma” by her grands and great-grands. She is remembered for calling each of us to sing Happy Birthday every year, her amazing cooking, singing lullabies and rocking all the babies, and delighting in the achievements and successes of us all. Everyone believes they were her “favorite” and she will forever be our favorite!

She was a member of Loganville Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class where she served as Sunday School Teacher for many years. She taught many children and grandchildren to cook, sew and crochet. She enjoyed reading, was always ready to go to a movie, and loved to travel. She had great fondness for Jekyll Island and the many vacations spent there with family. Recently, she was a member of a book club, a bird club and donned a fancy hat for tea parties! She treasured photographs and was known for giving pictures to loved ones and keeping scrapbooks and photo albums. She loved celebrations and tried to attend all weddings, parties, graduations and family gatherings. She believed in the power of prayer and spent countless hours in prayer for each of her family members and friends. She wanted more than anything for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to have a relationship with Jesus.

She is preceded in death by her husband, David A. Butler; her son, Jonathan “Todd” Butler; and her grandsons, Heath Butler and Matthew Butler Bulmer.
