Sam was born in Bamberg, South Carolina, the youngest of three brothers. In 1942, during World War II, he was drafted as a Private and took his training at Camp Lee, Virginia, and Camp Livingston, Louisiana, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. At the end of the war, he returned to Bamberg, where he worked as a store clerk in the pharmacy for a few years. Thereafter, he attended the University of South Carolina (under the GI Bill) and majored in accounting. After graduation, Sam took a position with the Internal Revenue Service. On June 30, 1950, he and Margaret Elizabeth Fogle were married. They had their first child, Cheryl Lane, and then a second child named Margaret Elizabeth (Beth). Sam remained in the US Army Reserve until full retirement as a Major at the age of 60. In 1955, Sam started working for the State of South Carolina as a bank examiner and continued until age 62 (when he retired). Sam enjoyed watching television, particularly game shows, such as Family Feud and Jeopardy. Sam’s favorite foods were prepared Southern-style vegetables and ice cream. Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, and his daughter, Cheryl Lane, and is survived by his daughter, Beth Niagro, and his grandson, Derek Niagro, who both live in Loganville, GA.
