Sheriff Joe Chapman confirmed that the $5,500 reward money will be paid out to Brantley and Mark Wommack after the capture Friday of Jerome Mobley, the suspect in the murder of his estranged wife two days earlier.
“Absolutely they will get the money,” Chapman said. “I already have the $2,500 from Morgan County. I just need to contact them and let them know they can come and collect it.”
The presentation was made on Tuesday afternoon at the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.
In the meantime, Mobley remains in Grady Memorial Hospital under 24-hour armed guard, Chapman said. The massive manhunt ended Friday afternoon when the authorities were contacted by the Wommacks.
“I believe Brantley saw him and ran in and called his father. He (the fugitive) then put a shotgun under his chin and pulled the trigger,” Chapman said. “He also had a 38-caliber wound to his right inner though where his wife had shot him.”
The incident began at about 6:45 am. on Wednesday morning with a call from the victim’s home on Knox Chapel Road in the Social Circle area of Walton County where the body of Mobley’s estranged wife was located. Chapman said they could see from the scene that there had been some type of shootout. Mobley had broken out the side glass window of a door and broken into the home and Mobley’s wife had received a fatal wound. Mobley had been ordered to stay away from his wife and children in January after he was charged with cruelty to children, reckless conduct and making terroristic threats.
Mobley’s truck was later found abandoned about a mile and a half away in Morgan County, kicking off the manhunt. Mobley is now also charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree as his children were in the home at the time of the Wednesday morning attack. A motion had been filed on April 2 to revoke his bond, according to Alcovy Circuit Court records, but that request appears to have been denied at that time.
Katie Mobley, 29, was laid to rest this past weekend. A gofundme account has been set up to assist with expenses for her two young children.
