Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Cal Barton is reporting that a 12-year-old died in the wreck on S. Madison Avenue in Monroe on Tuesday afternoon. He was a passenger in a Chevrolet Suburban (correction – this was originally reported as a Tahoe) driven by Jasmine Chandler, 34, of Monroe, that allegedly ran a red traffic light and collided with a Honda Odyssey van, driven by Mary Ann Smith, 55, from Monroe, that was headed westbound on Church Street. The Suburban was headed northbound on S. Madison Avenue.
“The Suburban failed to stop for red traffic signal, traveling into the intersection and was struck by the van. The van continued a short distance to a final rest in the intersection facing west,” Barton said. “There were four other passengers to include the deceased, Sean Thomas, 12 years old from Monroe inside the Suburban. Sean was ejected and deceased on the scene. One passenger was taken to Clearview with minor injuries, the driver and two other passengers were taken to Athens Regional with minor injuries.”
Barton said Smith and a passenger, also from Monroe, were taken by Ambulance to Clearview Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Barton said charges for Chandler are pending.
Officials confirm the car wreck on S. Madison Avenue in Monroe involves one fatality. In addition, Capt. Jeff Allen with Walton County Fire Rescue has confirmed that WCFR units are assisting the City of Monroe with an extrication in the wreck that involves multiple patients with serious injuries. The accident happened late Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 26, 2017.
