Initial story

Trooper First Class Cal Barton with Georgia State Patrol said a 22-year-old Loganville man died and two other teens received critical injures in a wreck on Youth Jersey Road, north of Anglin Road in Walton County in the early hours of Sunday morning, Feb. 11, 2018. A third teen also received serious injuries. Barton said the call to the 911 center came in at 0102 a.m.

According to Barton, Rafael Guzman, 17 and his passenger, Joshua Brownlee, 15, both of Loganville, were driving south on Youth Jersey Road at a high rate of speed on a red Honda dirt bike (vehicle 1). At the same time, Luis Gomez, 22, of Loganville, on a green Kawasaki dirt bike (vehicle 2) and Juan Gomez, 15, also on a green Kawasaki dirt bike (vehicle 3) were traveling north on Youth Jersey Road.

“For unknown reasons, vehicle 1 traveled into the northbound lane, striking vehicle 2 and vehicle 3. Area of impact was in the northbound lane of Youth Jersey Road,” Barton said. “After impact, all persons were ejected from their respective dirt bikes.”

Barton said Guzman and Brownlee were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center by Walton EMS with serious injuries. Luis Gomez, 22, died at the scene and Juan Gomez, 15, was transported to Piedmont Athens Medical Center with serious injuries.

The accident shut Youth Jersey down for several hours early Sunday morning. Barton said no helmet or protective gear was worn by any of the drivers. He said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this crash. Charges, however, are pending.

It has been a very busy weekend for local public safety officials with several accidents, beginning on Friday evening.
