Gwinnett County, GA (September 11, 2020) – On Thursday, September 10, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Gwinnett County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting in Norcross, GA.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 12:40 PM, the Gwinnett County Police Department was patrolling the parking lot of the In-town Suites located at 1990 Willow Trail Pkwy, Norcross, GA. An officer observed a man and a woman in the parking lot standing by a vehicle. The man and woman went into a room at the lodge before exiting the room. The officer ran the tag of the vehicle, and the results came back indicating the vehicle was stolen. The officer approached the man and woman about the stolen vehicle. They both ran from the parking lot in different directions. Gwinnett Police Department officers started a search of the area for the man and woman. K9 Blue assisted in the search.
The search spanned a large area and eventually K9 Blue detected a scent that led the officers back to the wooded area behind the lodge. K9 Blue was released toward the man. During the encounter, K9 Blue and the man were shot.
K9 Blue was transported to a veterinarian facility in Buford where he subsequently died from a gunshot wound. The man was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. At this time, the man has not been identified. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, September 11, 2020.
The female involved has not been located.
No other officers were injured.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once completed, it will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Update from Gwinnett County Police Department
(Norcross, Ga., September 10, 2020) – The Gwinnett County Police Department was involved in a fatal officer involved shooting earlier this afternoon behind 1990 Willow trail Pkwy in Norcross. Officers assigned to a detail investigating gang activity were at the location when they discovered a stolen vehicle with two occupants inside. When an officer attempted to make contact with the two individuals they both ran from the officer in two separate directions.
Officers assigned to the SWAT Unit, including SWAT K9 Blue responded and began searching for a male suspect that fled into the woods behind the location. During that search, SWAT K9 Blue located items from the suspect and tracked him to a location within the woods. The suspect was given commands and at some point fired on officers. Officers returned fire after being fired upon. During the gunfire, K9 Blue and the suspect were both shot. Both K9 Blue and the suspect were transported to hospitals where they both died from their injuries. The second suspect that was seen running from the scene was not arrested.
This shooting will be investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. SWAT K9 Blue was the first full-time SWAT dedicated K9. He was five years old and bravely served the citizens of Gwinnett County in the police department for over a year.

Georgia Police K-9 Foundation is reporting that Gwinnett K9 officer Blue did not survive the shooting incident today. The suspect also is reported to have died.
The Foundation is reporting that K9 Blue died after being shot in the line of duty. The following was posted on the Foundation Facebook page.
“Thoughts and prayers with Gwinnett County Pd. K9 Blue lost his life in line of duty today. He was tracking a felony suspect and was shot in the chest and head. The suspect is deceased. K9 Blue will honored on our in the line of duty death memorial at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. Thank you for your service K9 Blue!Any donation will go towards K9 Blues name being placed on the memorial at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center.”
The Gwinnett County Police Department has just been involved in an officer involved shooting near Willow Trail Parkway and Indian Trail –Lilburn Road in Norcross. At this time all the information that is available is that at least one person has been shot as well as a police K9.
