UPDATE: CBS 46 is reporting that the lockdown was reportedly lifted at about 10 a.m. It is not known at this time whether the suspect is in custody.
Newton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Georgia Piedmont Technical College on Bob Williams Drive has been placed on lockdown as a safety precaution due to an armed intruder in the vicinity.
A spokesperson for the NCSO said the suspect is not on the premises. Students at the college were urged to stay locked in their classrooms until the all-clear has been given.
The message read: “We are in a lock down on building D at the Newton campus in Covington on Bob Williams Road due to an armed intruder. Please lock all doors and stay in your classrooms. Do not attempt to enter the campus grounds until the all clear is given.”
CBS 46 News is reporting that an armed man took off from the Covington Police Department into the woods behind Bob Williams Road and the Covington News is reporting that three Newton County Schools are also on lockdown as a result of this incident.
As at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, the all clear had not been given and NCSO had not yet reported that the suspect was in custody.
