Sgt. Chris Ralston with the City of Lawrenceville Police Department confirmed that the victim in the multi-vehicle wreck on Highway 316 in Gwinnett County Monday was a woman. Official identification and confirmation to next of kin is not yet complete so an identity is not being released. However, he did confirm that it does not appear to be a resident of Walton County. Ralston said at this time no charges have been filed, but the accident is still under investigation. He said everybody is being co-operative and they do not believe that drugs or alcohol were involved.
Gwinnett firefighters report they are currently on the scene of a multi-vehicle/multi-patient injury accident on Highway 316 east bound at Buford Drive in Lawrenceville and the road is expected to be shut down for several hours.
According to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge, one person has died, nine people were transported with minor to moderate injures with two adults considered to be in a critical condition. Children were included with the injured and another eight people were evaluated and released at the scene. In total 10 adults, including the deceased, and eight children were injured in the accident.
“One vehicle was underneath a tractor trailer and was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived. The driver of that vehicle is deceased at the scene. There are a total of 8 vehicles involved in the crash,” Rutledge said. “The incident was treated as a mass casualty (MCI) response by Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.”
Rutledge said the patients involved in the wreck were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville and CHOA-Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.
