Update

It has been a busy weekend for local public safety personnel with several single vehicle accidents beginning Friday night and ending with a fatality in the early morning hours of Sunday morning. Officials believe that at least in some instances, the heavy fog could have been a contributing factor.

According to officials from Walton County Fire Rescue, an accident involving several dirt bikes on Youth Jersey Road just after 1 a.m. on Sunday morning closed down the road due to a fatality and two critical injuries. The road remained closed at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. The two critical patients were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center. Trooper First Class Cal Barton with Georgia State Patrol confirmed one person died and the two others are very critical.

“There is also another injury that is very serious,” Barton said.

The run of accidents began on Friday with an accident on Friendship Church Road.

“It was a single vehicle that apparently lost control in a curve due to heavy fog, and rolled over. The driver of that vehicle was ejected and was transported by EMS to Clearview with moderate injuries,” said Batallion Chief Craig League with WCFR. “There also was a single vehicle accident (Friday night) on Bold Springs Road near Hwy 81, but there were no injuries reported.”

Saturday another single vehicle wreck was reported on Highway 138 near lakeside.

“There was a moderate injury to the driver, she was the only occupant of the vehicle,” League said. “She had to be extricated by WCFR personnel. She was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional by Walton County EMS.”

“Three National Guardsmen returning from drill witnessed the accident and jumped in to help early on. They were very helpful,” said Capt. Jeff Allen with WCFR.

There also was a wreck on Highway 11 at Emmett Doster Road near the Barrow County line.

“Single vehicle in the woods, down an embankment,” League said. “No injuries reported. Also likely due to heavy fog.”

This was followed Saturday night by another single vehicle accident when a vehicle ran into a tree on Emmett Still Road at Kent Rock Road.

“The driver had to be extricated by fire personnel. Moderate injuries to the male driver, he was transported by Walton County EMS to Gwinnett Medical Center,” League said.
