Walton County BOC to vote on budget and millage rate, impact fees, more…

The Walton County Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on the YE 2021 Budget and adopt the millage rate at the August meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020. A second and third public hearing on the budget will take place at noon today and again at 5:30 p.m. prior to the meeting. Residents of Walton County are invited to voice their opinions prior to the meeting. It will take place in the Walton County Board of Commissioners offices in the Historic Courthouse at 111 S. Broad St. in Monroe. All interested persons are invited to attend. They are encouraged to submit written or oral comments concerning these issues.

At the first meeting, which took place on July 27, incoming Walton County Chairman David Thompson spoke against both the FY 2021 budget at well as the millage rate.

The Walton County BOC has tentatively adopted a 2020 millage rate of 10.905 mills which will require an increase in property taxes of .228 mills, or 2.14 %. Although the rate is the same as last year, because of an increase in property values most property owners will see an increase in their tax bill. This required the three public meetings to afford taxpayers the opportunity to voice their opinion. 

In a public notice posted on the website, WCBOC noted that without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 10.677 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $150,000 is about $13.68 and for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $125,000 is about $11.40.
