Initial report

The National Weather Services has issued a Special Weather Statement for several area counties, including Walton and Gwinnett for overnight Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018.

According to the alert, hazardous driving conditions are possible tonight and into Thursday morning due to the recent snowfall. Any lingering wet roads could freeze overnight with the cold temperatures expected and this could make travel hazardous over any roads that did not dry out. If travel is essential, motorists are urged to exercise caution.

In Gwinnett County, a wind chill advisory also is now in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday with wind chills expected to to range from 10 above zero to below zero. The NWS warns that the wind chill could cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes of exposed skin.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has extended the State of Emergency ruling for 83 counties, which include Gwinnett and Walton. As a result, state government offices will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018. However, as of 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018, neither Gwinnett nor Walton County had given any official ruling on whether or not school will be delayed or cancelled on Jan. 18. No local government offices had updated their situations either.

We will update as soon as any ruling is given by any Walton or Gwinnett authority.
