Dekalb CEO and Former Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond Endorses Adriane Brown for Monroe’s City Council for District 3

Monroe, GA, October 2, 2017– Candidate Adriane Brown, who is running for City Council for Monroe’s District 3, received her first major endorsement from Dekalb County CEO and Former Labor Commissioner-Michael Thurmond for her race for City Counsel.
Thurmond was born and raised in Athens, Georgia. In 1986, he became the first African-American elected to the Georgia General Assembly from Clarke County since the Reconstruction. During his legislative tenure, Thurmond authored major legislation that has provided more than $250 million in tax relief to Georgia’s senior citizens and working families.
Following his legislative service, Thurmond was called upon to lead the State Division of Family and Children’s Services and direct Georgia’s historic transition from welfare to work. He created the innovative Work First Program, which helped over 90,000 welfare-dependent Georgia families move from dependence into the workforce.
As superintendent of DeKalb schools, Thurmond is credited with stabilizing the system during a governance crisis, upgrading its threatened accreditation, eliminating a multimillion-dollar deficit and improving student academic performance and graduation rates.
Brown worked for Thurmond at WXAG 92.7 FM and 1470 AM radio station, in which Thurmond owns in Athens. While there, Brown hosted a community based talk show that centered around education and empowerment. She was there from 2012-2014. While working for Mr. Thurmond he would often share information about how to build a successful business and hard work and dedication is key to being successful. These key elements resonated with Brown to this day. Thurmond can attest to Brown’s commitment to the community and passion to serve District 3 effectively.
Brown’s campaign focuses on Quality Affordable Housing, Transportation, Economic Development, Education, and Public Safety. Brown’s mantra is “commitment, leadership and experience.” Although the process will take quite some time, she hopes to put a dent in and address all the issues that Monroe’s District 3 is faced with.
