Update: Watkinsville man charged in accident that killed a 65-year-old Monroe man


Georgia State Patrol report that at about 5:01 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, 2019, an accident on the Social Circle bypass resulted in the death of a 65-year-old Monroe man and the arrest of a 31-year-old Watkinsville man. Sgt. James Buchanan, Commander of GSP Post 46, reports that a 2009 Chevrolet 3500 truck was traveling north on Social Circle Bypass Road in Walton County when it crossed the centerline and traveled into the southbound lane where it struck a 1993 Ford Crown Victoria head-on, killing the driver, Robert Lindsey, 65 of Monroe. The driver of the Chevrolet truck immediately fled the scene on foot.

“Post 46 Troopers, GSP Aviation and Walton County Sheriff’s Office K9s searched for the suspect, Michael Christopher McKool, 31, of Watkinsville, GA,” Buchanan said. “At approximately 0750, McKool was located close to the crash scene and arrested.”

Buchanan said McKool was charged with Felony Hit and Run, Vehicular Homicide 1st Degree, Failure to Maintain Lane, Possession of Cocaine, and Crossing Guard Line with Prohibited Objects.

Highway 11 at Social Circle Parkway was shut down on Friday morning due to a fatal accident. Social Circle Police Department and Georgia State Patrol are on the scene. Reports are that the driver of the other vehicle ran on foot from the scene and a helicopter is in the air searching for him. Avoid the area.
