Breaking: Several graves and markers damaged at Shoal Creek Cemetery due to single vehicle wreck

A single-vehicle accident at Shoal Creek Cemetery on Shoal Creek Road and Perry Smith Road on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019, caused damage to several graves and markers in the old cemetery, according to Georgia State Patrol Post 46 Commander Sgt. James Buchanan.

“The vehicle was on Shoal Creed Road heading away from Gratis Road to Perry Smith Road when he ran off on the right-hand side of the road and ended up striking several of the cemetery plots,” Buchanan said. “No charges are expected at this time.”

Walton County Sheriff’s Office reported on its Facebook page that no drugs or alcohol are suspected. GSP is handling the investigation, but due to ransomware attack last month on the DPS Public Information Office computers, it will be about 5 – 7 days before the report will be available for anybody wanting to file an insurance claim.

“We are having to do it all by hand and anybody wanting a report will have to come in and get it,” Buchanan said.

The GSP email is still down. The details of the report are wreck # 114 – 19S032794.
