Cars destroyed and others damaged by a car fire in parking lot at Washington Farms Saturday

No injuries were reported

OCONEE COUNTY, (Oct. 14, 2024) – A fire that officials believe started in a parked car parked in one of the parking lots at Washington Farms in Watkinsville on Saturday significantly damaged several cars, totally destroying seven of them.

According to Cliff Threadgill, administrative coordinator for Oconee County Fire Department, Oconee County Fire Rescue responded to a vehicle fire at about 1:21 p.m. this past Saturday, Oct 12, 2024.

“There were seven vehicles that were a total loss. Seven more vehicles were damaged due to exposure,” Threadgill said. “The cause of the fire is unknown, but arson is not suspected. Damage estimates are unknown and determined by insurance companies. Most importantly, there were no injuries.”

Threadgill confirmed that it is believed that the fire began in one vehicle and then spread to the surrounding vehicles that either totally burned or were damaged as a result of their proximity to one of the other vehicles that had caught fire.
