There were two large structure fires in Walton County over the weekend – one on Double Springs Road on Sept. 27 and another on Barrett Woods Drive on Sept. 29. The cause of both fires is currently listed as undetermined, but Walton County Fire Chief Craig League reported that fire investigators theorize that the one on Double Springs Road was likely caused by embers from a grill falling onto a deck and re-igniting.
“The Barrett Woods Fire is also currently listed as undetermined, pending further investigation. The fire is thought to have been electrical in cause. The wiring in the area of fire origin will undergo further testing,” League said, adding that the home was not abandoned as some reports had indicated. “It was unoccupied. No one was currently living in the house, but the utilities were still connected and operational.”
With the area being so dry this year through the summer and into fall, authorities are warning that although the burn ban lifts effectively at midnight tonight, it is not a good idea to undergo any outside burning at this time.
