City of Monroe to finalize new alcohol ordinance

The City of Monroe will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, under the newly elected Mayor John Howard for the first Called Meeting of 2018. The meeting takes place in Council Chambers of Monroe City Hall at 2015 N. Broad Street. The public is invited to attend.

One of the items on the agenda is the second reading of the city’s updated alcohol ordinance. A review of the ordinance began a year ago with the intent of modernizing it to make it more friendly for potential economic development. It was finalized after the state passed a bill that would allow breweries to sell their products, under certain conditions, on site, enabling the city to incorporate the changes into the updated ordinance. The updated Monroe alcohol ordinance, following the second reading and adoption, allows for wine tasting and outdoor sales as well as brew pubs and the sale of craft beer.
