Community rallies around family of MAHS student who passed away this weekend

It was a sad weekend in the local community with the loss of a 14-year-old Monroe Area High School student who had recently been diagnosed with Lymphoma. Monroe Area High School posted the following notice on the Facebook page this morning from MAHS principal Bryan Hicks.

It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community. Over the weekend Dae’ Von A. Hammond, 10th grade student, passed away at his home in Monroe after a short illness. This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns and questions for our entire school, especially our students.

Our school and the Walton County School District has a Crisis Intervention Team made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents and school personnel at difficult times such as this. At our school, we have counselors and support staff available for any student who may need or want help or any type of assistance surrounding this loss. We encourage you, as parents, to also feel free to use our resources.

Condolences have been pouring in for a popular student who was beloved by students, teachers and fellow football team mates. A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover “funeral costs and hospital bills so the family focus on Daevon’s siblings and themselves during these trying days.” Click or tap on the GoFundMe page if you can help.
