COVID-19: Spike in positive cases at WC Schools include 34 at YMS and 10 at WGHS

There was a sharp increase in new cases districtwide in Walton County School District this week, including 34 cases at Youth Middle School and 10 at Walnut Grove High School. In total, there were 57 new cases reported this week or .36 % of the school population. This resulted in 391 or 2.4 % of the school population being placed under precautionary quarantine.

Parents of YMS were notified at the beginning of the week when 21 positive cases were reported between Friday and Monday, 2021. Callen Moore, public relations specialist for WCSD, said steps have been taken to deal with the uptick in cases at YMS.

“Staff members have increased fogging in all areas of the school, changed all air filters and increased cleaning during the day. During this time, the team has also been diligent in their contact tracing and has confirmed that the majority of these cases are connected to multiple outside parties and large gatherings. Data continues to support that the spread of COVID-19 within the school is limited,” Moore said. “We need WCSD families to remain vigilant in their efforts to limit exposures outside of school in order to help keep the school open and safe for in-person learning. We would also like to remind parents that under the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Administrative Order, students are not permitted to attend school if they are awaiting COVID-19 test results.”
