Update
Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Service report that the fire at the Word Aflame Tabernacle Church on Loganville Highway in Grayson Sunday appeared to have started by the baptism pool in the sanctuary. The structure was unoccupied and locked when crews arrived and they had to force entry. Multiple lines had to be used to stop the advancement of the fire and there is very heavy and extensive damage in the sanctuary. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Initial story
Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a fire found smoldering inside the sanctuary at the Word Aflame Tabernacle Church in Grayson on Sunday morning. GCFES reports that the fire is now out and crews are conducting overhaul.
According to Capt. Tommy Rutledge, public information officer for GCFES, the fire crew was responding to another location when they saw smoke coming from the church as they passed by.
“Firefighters located a smoldering fire inside the sanctuary that caused considerable damage to the interior. There was no one at the church at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported,” Rutledge said in a press release.
Rutledge said the cause of the fire is currently undetermined and under investigation. A representative from the church is at the scene talking to firefighters and the investigator.
