The family of former Monroe mayor Harry Knight announced that he passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday morning, Aug. 6, 2017.
“He had developed pneumonia and just could not fight anymore,” his family announced.
Tentative funeral arrangements have been made for Wednesday at Harmony Baptist Church, but full visitation and funeral arrangement will be posted as soon as they are available.
Knight served for three terms as mayor of Monroe and served on the city council prior to that, according to his family.
“He loved Monroe with all his heart and continued to express interest in what was going on right up to the end, said daughter-in-law Connie Hale. “I have never known anyone who thought so much of his home city. He was truly a civil servant for the city and only wanted what was best for the city and its citizens.”
Knight, who grew up in the Ebenezer community, was 92 years old and 10 months, his family says.
“And he loved being that age. He was planning his 100th birthday party,” Hale said.
