Former City of Social Circle Mayor Frank Sherrill passed away on Thursday, Feb. 18,2021. Social Circle Mayor David Keener released a statement on learning of Sherrill’s passing.
“We are saddened by the passing of former Social Circle Mayor, Frank Sherrill. Frank served as our Mayor for 19 years and for the past several years has been a member of our Social Circle Development Authority. He will certainly be missed in our community,” Keener said.
Sherrill was mayor of Social Circle from 1979 until 1997 and in 1998 he began serving on the Social Circle Planning Commission. He was currently serving as a member of the Social Circle Development Authority. Sherrill was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Social Circle and also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens.
In his obituary, it was noted that Sherrill was a veteran of the United States Army where he was a Captain in the Corps of Engineers and awarded a Bronze Star. He was the owner of Hightower Consulting Engineers, which was established in 1977. As mayor of Social Circle, he helped create the Georgia Municipal Gas Authority in 1987 and was President of the Georgia Municipal Association in 1988. He led a delegation for the National League of Cities to three Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) after the fall of the Soviet Union to advise in setting up their local governments.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech, and his master’s degree in Business Administration (finance) from Georgia State University.
