Fred’s discount retailer has announced that it is closing 129 more stores and the location in Social Circle is a casualty this time around. Fred’s in Social Circle is one of 14 in Georgia that are in the process of closing. The going-out-of-business sales, which began on July 12, 2019, were announced on the company website and the one at 1567 N. Cherokee Road in Social Circle was on the list. Customers are urged to shop early as inventory is expected to sell out quickly.

USA Today reported that this round of closings is another attempt by the company to try and secure its survival. This round follows 49 that were announced in June. The pharmacy side of the business was sold off last year and an employee at Fred’s in Social Circle confirmed that the pharmacy side of the business has been closed since then.

After this round of closings, Fred’s will only have 80 of the original 650 general purposes stores that were up and running when the discount chain was at the top of its game. The company, which was first established in 1947, is headquartered in Memphis, Tenn. and has two distribution centers, one in Memphis and another in Dublin, Ga.
