Construction is officially underway on the new South Walton Community Center in Social Circle following Friday’s groundbreaking. The center will be located at 573 FairPlay Drive – across the street from the South Walton ball fields/next to Stephens Park (the old football field).
The Walton County Board of Commissioners voted earlier in the year to build the center after considering a design presented by the Social Circle GICH. Carter Watkins has the design contract and Albion Construction was awarded the project. Representatives from both companies were on hand to assist in the groundbreaking. The recreation center is being built by Walton County and funds for this project are coming from County SPLOST funds. About $4.7 million was budgeted for the project, according to Jody Johnson, director of Walton County Parks and Recreation. The hope is that a ribbon cutting of the center will take place sometime in or at the end of the summer of 2021. Officials say it will serve the community, including seniors as well as youth.
