If members of the Georgia House of Representatives vote the same way as the Georgia Senate, the state may not see another time change in November. Residents could stay on Daylight Saving Time for the foreseeable future.
As of March 2026, the Georgia Senate passed House Bill 154 (HB 154), known as the “Georgia Sunshine Protection Act,” which aims to establish year-round daylight saving time. The bill requires Georgia to move from the Eastern Time Zone to the Atlantic Time Zone by petitioning the U.S. Department of Transportation. If approved, this would eliminate the need to change clocks twice a year.
House Bill 154 (HB 154) would permanently end the biannual changing of clocks by switching to permanent daylight saving time. The bill directs the governor to ask the U.S. Secretary of Transportation to move Georgia into the Atlantic Time Zone, which is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time. The Senate passed the bill 45 to 5 on March 23, 2026. It now heads back to the House for a final vote.
Those in favor of the change argue that changing clocks is harmful to public health, citing spikes in heart attacks, strokes, and car accidents after time changes. However, not everybody in the House expects there to be any change, despite another attempt to make it happen. Georgia Rep. Bruce Williamson, (R-Monroe) says he doubts that everybody necessary to make it happen would be on board.
“As much as I dislike flipping our time zones back and forth, I don’t think going to Atlantic Standard time will work, unless all of our neighbor states adjust accordingly. I doubt that the US Department of Transportation would support it either,” Williamson said. “I would be fine with simply going back to Eastern Standard time. The evidence is clear that shifting the clock back and forth is dangerous.”
He noted that he has learned, however, that prior to 1941 Georgia was on a split time zone. Previously, both Atlanta and Columbus were on Central time.
