Three family members to be tried together in alleged Social Circle double murder

Three members of the Gunn family will stand trial together next year in the alleged shooting death on Nov. 16, 2017 of Dontravious Stanley, 18, and Antavious Smith, 19, both of Newton County. The shooting took place at a residence on Hightower Trail, just outside the Social Circle City limits. The location on Hightower Trail was just past General Mills, close to Willow Springs Church.

At a hearing last week in the Walton County courtroom of Alcovy Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Eugene M. Benton, a motion was granted to join together Dequan, Quintadric and Jotavious Gunn to stand trial for the alleged double murder.

“Judge Benton also indicated that he wants this case tried in the first half of next year and that all parties need to get together with his office to find a week that works for everyone,” Alcovy Judicial Circuit Chief Assistant District Attorney Randy McGinley said. The three are charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

At the time of the shooting, Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman said they were members of the same family, but he was not sure of exactly what the relationship between each was. He thought they were possibly cousins.
