The Gwinnett County Police Department Homicide Unit announced that it has made an arrest in the death of a 10-month-old baby boy.
According to a press release from GCPD, the mother’s boyfriend, Jahlin Corey, 27, of Norcros has been charged with two counts of felony murder, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of aggravated battery. The child’s mother, Dennisa Vega-Rivera, 27, also of Norcross, has been charged with one count of cruelty to children 2nd degree.
GCPD report that emergency personnel were called at 4:40 a.m. to an address on Beaver Ruin Road regarding a child with breathing problems. The baby was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where it died shortly thereafter. When injuries were noted on the child’s body, GCPD were notified due to the family’s Gwinnett County address and the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the body and executed a search warrant on the home.
The autopsy results allegedly revealed severe injuries including, but not limited to, fractured skull, fractured ribs, and intestinal bleeding. When Corey and Vega-Rivera were confronted with the autopsy results, GCPD report that their explanations were inconsistent with the finding and they were arrested.
Both subjects are currently being held at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond.
