
(Lawrenceville, Ga) A Gwinnett County inmate on work detail in Lawrenceville Wednesday morning was struck and killed while walking behind the work detail bus. Hunter O’Conner, 22, of Mableton, Ga., was walking behind the bus to control approaching traffic when he was stuck and killed by an approaching vehicle. The accident occurred on Lawrenceville Highway near the intersection of Lawrenceville Suwanee Road at 9:42 a.m. on May 9, 2018. Gwinnett County Police Department report that his family has been notified of his death.

GCPD report that Jennifer Adkins, 44, of Buford, GA was the driver and investigators determined Adkins was distracted and did not see O’Conner.
“There were no other occupants of the vehicle and no other injuries,” Sgt. Jake Smith, public information officer for GCPD, said in a press release. “Adkins was determined to be at fault for the accident and has been charged with 2nd degree vehicular homicide, distracted driving, and following too closely. She was arrested and transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center without incident.”
Smith said alcohol, drugs and speed and not thought to be factors, but the investigation is ongoing. At the time of going to press, Adkins was being held at Gwinnett County Detention Center on $7,000 bond.
