Happy New Year from Monroe-Walton Center for the Arts

What better way to start the New Year than with a Special Issue from the Monroe-Walton Center for the Arts.

A couple of times a year, we’d like you to see ALL our classes in one spot … so here it is – our class overview edition of our newsletter.
But here’s other news you can use!We are remaining open on Sundays as a trial for a couple weeks in January — we’re having more visitors every week!  If we continue to have folks come in and visit the gallery and gift shop, we will have permanent hours and will remain open seven days a week.Our Winter Members’ Show installs this week!
The drop off dates are JANUARY 3-4!  The categories: 2-D, 3-D, Functional Pottery, Photography, Fiber and Youth.   Cash prizes will be awarded.  Our Members Shows are intended to showcase our community’s local artists best works, whether you’re just getting started out or are a professional artist.  It’s a membership privilege and benefit to have to possibility of hanging YOUR works in a gallery!

Writing for Everyone!
Thursdays Jan 3 – Jan 31 @ 6:30 – 8 pm.

Writing for Everyone kicks off this week, coinciding with the Walton Writers monthly meeting.  Come to this special meeting for a preview of Jessica’s class.
Taught by published author and poet Jessica Hudgins.  Join us for an inclusive writing course for all ages!  We’ll read poems and short stories, write our own and listen to one another’s work.  All you need to bring is pencil and paper.  Fee:  $15 per class for members; $20 per class for non-members.

PAINTING AND PIZZA PARTY
Saturday, January 5 from 12 – 2 pm:  Ages 6+.  Kids will paint a fun acrylic mitten scene and learn new techniques with Donna.  $25 includes all supplies and pizza!  Email Donna @  donna@monroeartguild.org to register.

Join Mary Ellen and Denis Vogel for an art talk and video about one of their favorite artists, Rodolfo Morales. Rodolfo Morales was a Mexican painter, who incorporated elements of magic realism into his work. Morales is best known for his brightly colored surrealistic dream-like canvases and collages often featuring Mexican women in village settings.
Also … we introduce our Healing Arts series … 
Kimberly Slape, a counselor at Hope Springs Counseling will take a few minutes to provide some pointers on how to reduce stress and anxiety, along with some fun activities and strategies.

General Class Info …

Our class list is continually changing as we add new classes; please watch for updates @  monroewaltonarts.org.  You can view examples of each class on our events & classes page.

Weekly classes can be joined throughout the year. Our experienced instructors take students of all skill levels and meet you where you are – beginner to advanced (exceptions will be noted).

  • Seating is limited.  Most classes require pre-registration 48 hours in advance and some may fill quickly.
  • Many weekly classes offer a “TRY IT” class (pay for one class).  Multi-week bundles, if offered, will save you money.
  • Registration procedures vary from class-to-class.  Read each individual class description for registration instructions.
  • Supply fees:  if there is a supply fee, please pay that amount in cash directly to the instructor at the time of class.
NEW!!  HEALING ARTS SERIES

Vision with Values Workshop with Hope Springs counselor, Kimberly Slape: Saturday, January 5th at 11:00 am – 12:30.  Moving beyond just wanting our lives to change and KNOWING how to change without being overwhelmed or giving up.  Create a “vision” board but also dig into the practical tools of the HOW TOs of achieving your goals. Bring some magazines if you can.  We will supply glue, poster boards and extra magazines.  Fee: $35.00 for members; $40 for non-members.

Paint to the Music Third Fridays Jan – March.  (1/18, 2/15 and 3/15) @ 7pm-10pm. With art therapist, Tamara Liz.  Let yourself be inspired by music to create your own art. It doesn’t have to look good, it will feel good. At the end, we will share our creations and get new insights about our art. Come jam with us!  Members $25, non-members $30. BYOB.

Painting New Perspectives for Suicide Survivors Saturday, January 19 @ 11-1pm.  With Art Therapist, Tamara Liz. Losing a loved one is always hard, losing them to suicide even harder. We feel guilty and burdened. Hear new perspectives and paint a bridge to new understandings. You will gain new insights through the powerful use of art to start healing.  Members $25, non-members $30.

Self-Love for Caregivers Saturday, February 16 @ 11-1pm.  With Art Therapist, Tamara Liz.  Being a caregiver is hard and exhausting.  Take some time for yourself as we vent (a little!), share self-care tips and paint ourselves as flowers! Learn valuable strategies, share your creation and relax, even if just for a little while. Members: $25; non-members $35.

Spirit Art Workshop Saturday, March 16 @11-2pm. With Art Therapist, Tamara Liz.  In this workshop you will learn the intuitive process that helps you connect with Spirit and a step-by-step model to help you self-analyze and converse with your Higher-Self. Includes art materials and a booklet. Members $45, non-members $50.

WEEKLY ADULT CLASSES
Sculpture – Beginners, Multi-Media Design:  Tuesdays @ 11 – 1.  Instructor: artist Maria Ramos.  $80 for members, $95 for non-members.  OR TRY IT – one class for $22 members/$26 non-members plus supplies as needed.Drawing 101: Wednesdays @ 3 – 4 pm. Instructor:  Sandy Blanchard. Fee: MEMBERS: $15 per class or $50 for a four-class bundle. NON-MEMBERS: $20 per class or $55 for a four-class bundle. OPTIONAL if you don’t have these supplies: $10 (one-time fee) for Sketch Pad, Pencil #2 and kneaded eraser.Pottery:

  • Wednesdays @ 6 – 7:30 pm or
  • Thursday mornings @ 10 – 11:30 am
  • TRY IT! Pottery:  Try an hour of pottery with instruction by Rebecca.  $30 for members; $35 for non-members.  Supplies included.

Instructor: Rebecca Braswell.  Six weeks: $140 for members; $155 for non-members.  Contact Rebecca at braswellcr@bellsouth.net to register.

Drawing and the Art of Seeing:

  • Tuesdays @ 1 – 3 or
  • Thursdays @ 2 – 4 pm.

Instructor: Maria Ramos.  Four weeks: $65 members, $75 non-members.  One-time TRY IT class:  $20 for members; $25 for non-members plus $5 supply fee.   Students may bring supplies they have available or pay a once-a-month supply fee of $20. Supply list (if you wish to purchase) is determined by the individual interest of each student and can be provided at the first class.

Painting – Acrylic & Watercolor:

  • Thursdays @ 12 – 2 or
  • Saturday 12 – 2.

Instructor: Maria Ramos.  Four weeks: $65 members, $75 non-members.   Students may bring supplies they have available or pay a once-a-month supply fee of $20. Or TRY IT (one class) for $20 members/$25 non-members plus $5 supply fee.  Limited canvases will be available, priced according to style & size.

ART ASAP! AFTER SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAM
September – May (join month-to-month, no yearly commitment)General Arts: Tuesdays (Miss Donna’s class resumes Jan 8 2019)

  • 4:00 – 5:00 for ages 7-10 and (this class is full for Sept.)
  • 5:15 – 6:15 for ages 11 – 14.
  • Instructor: Donna Coffman.  Kids will try different forms of art every month.  Fee:  $65 for members; $75 for non-members per month.  Please contact Donna at donna@monroeartguild.org to register and pay.

Kids Pottery Class:  Wednesdays @ 4:45 – 5:45. Ages 10 and up. Instructor: Rebecca Braswell.  Monthly fee $75 for members; $85 for non-members plus one-time new student $10 tool fee.  $25 for clay (& glazes) as needed. Contact Rebecca at braswellcr@bellsouth.net to register.

High School Artists:  Wednesdays at 4 – 5 pm.  Join Maria Ramos to build on a strong foundation of fundamentals needed to produce an excellent and diverse portfolio. FEES: The monthly class fee is $65 members/ $75 non-members, plus a $10 monthly supply fee.

OPEN STUDIO – MEMBERS ONLY
Open Studio Pottery: During open hours or on Tuesdays from 6 – 8 pm.  You must be a member, be an active pottery student/experienced potter.  Must meet Rebecca Braswell for an orientation and approval into the open studio program.  No instruction provided. Use our wheels and other tools. $10 for members only.  Must use our clay. Supply fee: $25 for 25# clay & studio glazes as needed; FIRING: $10 per shelf or $25 for 2+ shelves (full load) per firing.  Contact Rebecca at braswellcr@bellsouth.net for more information, times available and an orientation to the studio.
FREE CREATIVE GATHERINGS

Monday Write In:  Mondays @ noon – 3 pm.  We’ve created a space for folks to come in, sit down, write, and talk to other writers. Very informal, come as you are, come when you can. Drop in and say hello. Stay ten minutes, stay three hours! Bring something you are working on. Critique groups welcomed. Open to anyone interested in writing. A quiet place to work on your craft. Hosted by Walton Writers founder Barbara Barth.  Free.

Monroe Makers:  Thursdays @ 11:30 am – 2:30 pm.  FREE!  Bring your own supplies and a sack lunch if you wish.  Hang out with other makers and creatives – paint, knit, draw, write – whatever moves you!  Stay for as long as you want!  Just show up – easy!

Our Winter Show opens January 8 and of course our Gift Gallery is open year-round.  Many works in the Winter show will be available for purchase, as well.Come by and browse for the most unique, thoughtful, affordable and beautiful gifts, all created by local artists!

If you’re a current member, you should have gotten a Guidelines and Registration Form via email. Email Hope and request one if you don’t have one. You can also pick a copy up at the Center.

Volunteer Orientation
Our next Volunteer Orientation is Saturday, January 12 from 1 – 3 pm.  Volunteers are needed to act as assistants in our special needs classes.  Please email Shay Youngblood, our coordinator for these classes, if you would like to be placed on our volunteer list to contact when our special needs classes are scheduled.
