MONROE, GA — (March 18, 2026) Community leaders, residents, and local supporters gathered on March 6 to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of the newly restored Lill Mill Lofts, a historic redevelopment that brings new life to one of the city’s landmark mill buildings. The event marked the completion of a transformation that blends Monroe’s industrial heritage with modern residential living. Guests toured the renovated property and celebrated the preservation of a site that has long been part of the community’s story.
The thoughtfully restored property features approximately 40 industrial-style loft apartments that maintain many of the original architectural elements of the historic mill while introducing contemporary comforts. Residents at Lill Mill Lofts enjoy modern amenities including in-unit washers and dryers, updated kitchen appliances, a fully equipped fitness center, rooftop gathering spaces, and pet-friendly accommodations. The design celebrates the character of the original structure with exposed brick, high ceilings, and large windows that reflect the building’s historic roots.
Also featured in the building is 9,000 Square Ft of office space making it a WorkPlayStay complex as well as climate controlled storage units and an undercover garage space with EV charging stations. It is a gated access facility and has its own downtown fishing pond.
Shane Short, president and CEO of Walton County Development Authority, was impressed with the options the complex brings to the country with regard to attracting business and talent and even to him personally.
“I think the Mill offers a different housing option for people that we didn’t have in Walton County that I think is fantastic,” Short said. “In fact, I like it so much I’m selling my house and moving in.”
Short said he is at a time when he and his wife were thinking of downsizing and the Mill seemed like the perfect option – even down to the storage space in the building.
“When you downsize there are always those things that you want to hold onto – like some of the things you may have kept in the garage – and the storage offered in the building is perfect for that,” Short said, adding that such things as Christmas decorations would qualify.
The office spaces also give someone the ability to have an office in the building just downstairs from your home, and even the storage spaces could qualify for some smaller inventory items if that is needed.
“What we don’t have is smaller office real estate in this county and the Mill offers that for people. If you’re an independent business owner and you just need an office to meet people, I think that’s a perfect option, like an attorney or a real estate agent, and you just need a professional space – that’s a great option.”
Located near the heart of Monroe, the development offers convenient access to the city’s growing downtown district, including restaurants, shopping, and local attractions.
