Intersection that took the life of a beloved Walton County teacher dedicated in her memory

On Aug. 8, 2024, it was exactly a year since Ashley MacDonald Callahan died in a tragic traffic crash at the intersection of Highway 81 and Ozora Church Road in Walton County. Three months later, a temporary traffic light was put up in advance a roundabout that is planned as way to improve the safety at that intersection.

But sadly, it was too late for the wife, mother, daughter, sister, family, friend, beloved community member and educator who lost her life at that intersection.

But from this week onward, her name will be memorialized at the intersection thanks to Georgia House Resolution 1434 authored by Georgia House District 111 Rep. Rey Martínez of Loganville. The Resolution calls for the intersection to be dedicated as the Ashley MacDonald Callahan Memorial Intersection in her honor.

In a small ceremony on the side of the road Tuesday, her family and friends gathered to unveil the sign and get a small replica as a keepsake of the sign that now memorializes their cherished family member.

The Resolution, read by Martinez to family members, says in part, “Ashley MacDonald Callahan, age 40 of Good Hope, passed away on August 8, 2023. She was born in Utah on April 22, 1983 to Marilyn Sturgeon MacDonald and Steven MacDonald. Ashley touched so many throughout her life. As a graduate of UGA, she was a Damn Good Dawg. She was a loving teacher who took time with every student she taught. She intensely loved her family and friends, and brought happiness and joy to everyone she met. Surviving are, husband, Dane Callahan; sons, Charles Callahan and Vincent Callahan; parents, Marilyn and Steven MacDonald; sister, Chelsea MacDonald; and brother, Michael MacDonald; father in law and mother in law, Sean Callahan and Beth Callahan.”

The Resolution, found at this link, goes on to pay tribute to Ashley Callahan, noting her 16 years of teaching as a high school and middle school teacher – inspiring her students, in one instance, by developing an oceanography course which was used by several schools. She also assisted with writing the oceanography curriculum for the State of Georgia.

For the moment, a traffic light is in operation at the intersection with a roundabout expected at some time in the future. But whatever safety measures are in operation, or implemented at some time in the future, anybody passing through will be reminded of the life that was lost prior to its implementation.

And anybody who knew and loved Ashley will be reminded of her life and legacy.
