SOCIAL CIRCLE – The City of Social Circle Police Department began teaming up with local restaurants this year to connect with the community through a monthly Coffee with a Cop. It is continuing the tradition with its summer version this Thursday – Milkshake with a Cop.
The restaurant partnering with the Social Circle PD for the event this month is Hot Rod’s Diner, behind the Blue Willow Inn Restaurant at 208 Village Circle. Social Circle residents are invited to meet SCPD Chief Tyrone Oliver and some officers from SCPD from 3 – 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2017.
These meetings were began by Oliver for residents to get together with members of the police department to “discuss community issues, build relationships… and drink coffee,” or in this case to enjoy a milkshake. The invitation is extended to all community members.
When the program began, Oliver said that it offers a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department and how it works. With so much of the interaction between police and the community being during emergency or emotional situations, those are not effective times for relationship building between the police and the community. These informal meetings offer an opportunity for a “relaxed, one-on-one interaction.”
Coffee with a Cop, or the summer version Milkshake with a Cop, is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country in an effort to enable local police departments to make better and lasting connections with the communities they serve.
