Monroe City Council to consider small lake, fountain, at Childers Park

Last month, Walton County Board of Commissioners agreed to relinquish any Monroe city parks that were under the County’s administration back to the City of Monroe for upgrades and renovations. The City had formulated a plan to take over the maintenance of these parks, which include Matthews Park and Hammond Park, pending funding availability to begin upgrades.

In the meantime, plans are underway to upgrade some of the current city parks in the spring, including Childers Park which lies between West Spring Street and McDaniel Street and the Pilot Park off E. Church Street. Plans for the Pilot Park that include a community garden are expected to be approved at the March City Council meeting with an expected completion date of June 2020. However, construction on improvements to Childers Park are expected to get underway sooner.

During Tuesday’s Called Council Meeting and Work Session, Monroe city officials will discuss plans to grade and build an approximately 5,570 square-foot lake habitat with a fountain and a gazebo at Childers Park. The park currently features a dog park, walking and exercise trails as well as some children’s playground equipment. There also will be a rework of the sodded dog park area and a shade structure for the slide area. The costs involved are expected to be discussed and voted on this month.

The Feb. 4 Called Meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall on N. Broad Street. The community is always invited to attend.
