Monroe City Council to discuss new subdivisions and additional downtown parking options

The City of Monroe will have its March Work Session beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at CityHall located on N. Broad Street. The public is invited to attend. The March voting session will be on Tuesday, March 10, at the same time and place.

Items on the agenda include the holdover from last month on a major subdivision proposed for McDaniel Street / Holly Hill Road. The city held off last month for a traffic study and had asked the developer to produce a plan that showed the layout of the homes on the plats. There was concern about the homes not being in keeping with the historical nature of the homes on McDaniel Street and being closer to the road than other homes on the street. Mark Willett, representing developer Cross Pointe LLC, told the council that the homes would be estate homes valued at about $500,000 and would be set back as far as was possible depending on the particular layout of the individual plats.

Another item up for discussion is a plan to add and additional 58 public parking spaces in the downtown area as well as additional sidewalks on Midland Avenue as well as Washington Street to link up with those across from the Fire Department. The parking lot will be redesigned and landscaped. This plan is expected to be more cost-effective – $4,500 per parking space, including sidewalks, compared to $25,000 plus per parking space for a parking deck. The budget allocation is $965,381.19 and there is $842,980.88 available in the budget.
