Monroe man charged in the shooting death of his brother


Monroe, GA (October 17, 2020) –  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that James Lewis McDougal, 31, of Monroe, is being charged with the shooting death of his brother.

According to a press release from the GBI, at about 4:35 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call of a person being shot at an address off Jack Glass Road in Monroe. When deputies arrived, immediate assistance was provided to the gunshot victim, Henry Thomas McDougal, 27, of Monroe. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. He was the brother of the man charged in his murder.

James McDougal surrendered to deputies a short time later. He was subsequently taken into custody and is being charged with murder.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI Athens Office to assist with the investigation. An autopsy on Henry McDougal will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur.  


Maj. Scott Whisnant said that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the shooting in Gratis Friday afternoon. Any further information is being referred to the GBI.

Maj. Scott Whisnant with Walton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that WCSO is investigating a shooting that took place this afternoon off Jack Glass Road.

Whisnant said there is no danger to the public as they do have a suspect in custody.

“We are not releasing any further details at the moment. It is an ongoing investigation,” Whisnant said.

The name or condition of the victim is not being released.
