Monroe to call for Special Election to fill District 3 unexpired term

There will be two items requiring action on the City of Monroe’s Called Council Meeting tonight, Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017 – a vote on the 2017 Millage Rate and a call for a Special Election for District 3. The District 3 seat became available following the resignation in May of Councilman Nathan Purvis when he moved out of the city.

Qualifying for the Special Election will be from 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017 and will end on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017 at the Board of Election at 303 South Hammond Drive, Suite 111, in Monroe. The fee for this will be $180 and the election will be on Nov. 7, 2017, along with the General Election. According to officials, the District 3 seat will also be on the ballot for the Nov. 7 General Election. The candidate who wins the Special Election will serve until Dec. 31, 2017 and the candidate who wins the General Election will be elected to serve the full 4-year-term that begins in 2018.

“Of course it will more than likely be the same candidate, but it could technically be a different one,” Monroe Councilman Larry Bradley said.

A candidate must earn more than 50 percent of the election to win or the top two candidates will participate in a Runoff Election on Dec. 5, 2017.

Monroe residents John Howard and Ross Bradley have already publicly announced that they will be running for the District 3 seat. The posts for full 4-year terms for the City of Monroe mayor and council districts 6, and 8 also will be on the ballot in November, along with the General and Special elections for District 3.
